A sea of granite towering above!
Yak Peak is an iconic granite peak soaring above the Coquihalla highway. Yak Check is the combination of two routes on Yak Peak. We climb the better, bottom half of Yak Crack to where it intersects the route Reality Check then climb the better, top half of Reality Check to the summit.
This provides almost 2000 feet of fun climbing with fantastic views the whole way. Along the route, you will encounter stellar features such as the 150m, 5.7 crack and the natural flake bridge. With a relatively quick approach (60 mins), bolted belays, and easy walk off, this route is a coastal favourite.
For climbers wanting to climb this route with less multi-pitch experience we recommend registering for a guided ascent of the Chief. The long routes on the Chief, such as the Squamish Buttress via Butt Face, are excellent preparatory routes for Yak Check.
Itinerary:
Meet at the Zopkios pull out (restrooms) on the northwest side of the Coquihalla Hwy at 6:30am. Introductions will be followed by reading and signing the waiver, checking equipment, and then beginning the approach. The approach hike takes 60 minutes to reach the base.
Plan to begin climbing at 8am.
The route is 14 pitches and takes approximately 7-8 hours to climb depending on participant(s). From the summit, views are incredible and a few photos are mandatory! Next you will begin the descent.
Descent time is approximately 1.5 hr.
