Beginner Rock Climbing

Intro Rock is a course for beginners with no previous experience. It’s the perfect program for beginners, groups, and corporate team building.

We start with the basics like showing how to wear your harness and helmet. Next we will teach you the figure-8 tie-in with the climbing rope.

This is a one day course typically held in the Squamish Smoke Bluffs. Take Level 1, 2, 3 or 4 Rock sequentially and receive 10% off! 

Itinerary

Courses are in Squamish from 8am - 4pm. Meet your Guide at Cloudburst Cafe in Squamish at 8am. Plan to be back at the cars by 4pm.

Pre-requisites

• Good physical condition 

Waiver

You are required to read the VMG Waiver and agree to it’s terms and conditions prior to paying or signing. Your guide needs to see the emailed waiver verification before participating.

Goals

• Safety systems and protocols, hazards at the crag, and risk management.

• Safety equipment basics: how to wear your harness, helmet, and rock shoes.

• Tying in with the rewoven figure-8 knot.

• Equipment strengths: ropes, carabiners, and bolts.

• Safe communication and terminology.

• Climbing techniques: hand jams, crimping, smearing, stemming, high step.

• Top rope belaying and lowering safely.

• Next steps: discuss self-directed practice and Level 1 Rock.

Note: Goals are flexible and can be tailored for groups.

Equipment

• Harness

• Helmet (climbing specific)

• Belay device + locking carabiner (pear-shaped)

• Chalk bag

• Rock shoes (required)

Note: VMG can supply all equipment except rock shoes (can rent from Climb On Squamish). Email us what you need.
