Cevasse Rescue!
Learning how to execute a rescue if someone falls into a crevasse is an essential skill. Use this course as a refresher or for rock climbers looking to head into the alpine. For beginners, we recommend our Level 1 Alpine course first.
If you already lead climb on rock or ice but want to explore the mountains across glaciers then this course is essential. Taking this course with Rescue 1 Rock makes a great weekend of rescue skills.
This course is conducted in the alpine and may require purchasing a gondola pass to access Whistler/Blackcomb ($50).
Itinerary
Meet your Guide in the morning at a location TBD. Courses use the Whistler Blackcomb Gondola to access alpine terrain quickly. Expect a long day with lots of learning.
Ski touring equipment is utilized early season with deep spring snow pack.
Pre-requisites
Good physical fitness.
Mountaineering experience.
Belaying and tying a figure-8 knot.
Waiver
You are required to read the VMG Waiver and agree to it’s terms and conditions prior to paying or signing. Your guide needs to see the emailed waiver verification before participating.
Goals
Review technical skills: knots, equipment strengths and limitations.
Crevasse rescue kits and equipment.
Rope ascending with a Tibloc and Microtraxion.
Snow anchors: T-slots, Snow pickets
Anchoring the climber, load transfer to anchor
Self-belaying with a prusik, prepping the crevasse lip
Hauling systems:
C-drop loop
2:1 and 6:1 haul systems
Roping up for glacier travel: spacing, brake knots, tying-in, rope length.
Mountain geography, features of a glaciated landscape, moraines, types of crevasses and how they form.
Note: Goals are flexible and will be tailored to the groups skill level.
